Finding Home Again: What the Home Purchase Sentiment Index Reveals—and What Our Hearts Already Know
May 14, 2025
What Does “Home” Really Mean?
For some, home is a place to build equity. For others, it’s where children are raised, loved ones are welcomed, and dreams take root. At Quo Vadis Retreats, we believe home is more than a financial decision—it’s a spiritual one. That’s why we pay attention when data begins to reflect the nation's sentiment about this sacred space.
The Federal Reserve’s FRED platform recently added the Home Purchase Sentiment Index (HPSI), developed by Fannie Mae. This index tracks Americans’ housing-related attitudes, intentions, and perceptions, including views on buying, selling, mortgage rates, and personal finances.
In today’s environment of elevated interest rates and lingering uncertainty, it’s no surprise that the HPSI reflects caution. Many feel now is not the right time to buy. But sentiment often lags behind opportunity, for good reason. Decisions about the home aren’t just about numbers. They’re about stability, identity, and peace—especially regarding your primary residence.
At our retreats, we often return to a simple but profound question:
Where are you being called?
This question isn’t just geographic. It’s about order. It’s about clarity. It’s about vocation. We ask the families we serve:
Is your home aligned with your best life?
Does it renew you—or burden you?
Is it a reflection of your values—or just a line on your balance sheet?
So whether you’re considering buying, selling, remodeling or building—or simply staying put—start by asking:
What is the true purpose of my home?
No matter how grand or humble, every home can be a place where love reigns and purpose is renewed. In that light, the HPSI becomes more than a market signal—it reflects how deeply we yearn for rootedness.
And when we lead with personal sentiment—rather than chase market timing—we often find greater peace, freedom, and even financial clarity.
We’re reminded of Our Lady, whose “yes” transformed a simple home in Nazareth into the dwelling place of the Divine. Her presence invites us to reimagine our own homes as spaces of grace, order, and calling.
If you’re ready to reflect more deeply on the purpose of your home and how it fits into the broader journey of your lifestyle and financial life, we invite you to attend an upcoming MasterClass. It would be our joy to walk with you.
